Grand Rapids, MI – The season’s first widespread lake effect snow event is underway across western and central Michigan, bringing bursts of moderate to heavy snow and slippery travel conditions through Monday evening, according to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids.
Forecasters say snow bands will continue to develop this afternoon and evening, producing localized accumulations of 3 to 6 inches in favored lake-effect zones such as Muskegon, Ludington, Holland, and St. Joseph. Areas farther inland, including Grand Rapids, Lansing, and Alma, may see 1 to 2 inches.
Roads and bridges could quickly become slushy or icy, particularly overnight as temperatures fall into the 20s. A brief lull is expected around the Monday morning commute before another round of lake effect snow redevelops in the afternoon, mainly along and west of US-131.
The NWS advises drivers to allow extra time for travel, keep winter gear and an emergency kit in vehicles, and stay alert for rapid visibility changes under heavier snow bands.
