Fond du Lac County, WI – A serious injury crash Tuesday morning sent a 78-year-old man to the hospital in critical condition after his SUV slid off an icy roadway and struck a boat and trailer in the Town of Lamartine.
According to the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office, dispatchers received a 911 call at approximately 8:54 a.m. Tuesday reporting a single-vehicle crash on County Highway OO near W7454. Initial reports indicated the vehicle had left the roadway and collided with a trailered boat.
Deputies, along with North Fond du Lac Fire/EMS and the Lamartine Volunteer Fire Department, responded to the scene. Investigators determined the SUV had been traveling eastbound on County Highway OO when it encountered a patch of black ice, causing the driver to lose control.
The vehicle slid off the road, entered the south ditch, and ultimately struck the trailered boat before coming to rest on the property. Authorities confirmed the driver and sole occupant was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Due to the severity of his injuries, a Flight for Life medical helicopter was requested to land at Village Park in North Fond du Lac. The driver was then transported to ThedaCare Regional Medical Center–Neenah, where he remains in critical condition as of Tuesday.
The crash remains under investigation by the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office. Officials say black ice and winter road conditions are believed to be contributing factors.
Additional assistance at the scene was provided by the Village of North Fond du Lac Police Department, Wisconsin State Patrol, and the Fond du Lac County Highway Department.
Drivers across Fond du Lac County are urged to use caution during morning hours, when black ice can be difficult to detect, especially on rural highways.
