Chicago, IL — With over 18.5 million people expected to pass through airport security nationwide this week, Illinois travelers are being reminded to arrive early, stay calm, and be prepared as the Fourth of July holiday travel rush gets underway.

According to the Transportation Security Administration, the travel period from Tuesday, July 1, through Monday, July 7, is expected to see record-breaking crowds, with Sunday, July 6, projected as the busiest day, with approximately 2.9 million passengers anticipated at checkpoints nationwide.

TSA Acting Administrator Ha Nguyen McNeill stated the agency is fully staffed and deploying new technology and procedures aimed at improving efficiency and enhancing the experience for all travelers, including families. “We ask travelers to pack their patience, especially during peak travel days, as we work to provide maximum hospitality to our customers,” McNeill said in a statement.

Families with children can benefit from expedited screening, as those under 12 may use TSA PreCheck lanes with a registered adult, and modified screening procedures are in place to minimize disruptions. Strollers, baby carriers, and car seats are permitted through checkpoints but must go through X-ray screening.

All travelers are reminded to carry a REAL ID or another TSA-accepted identification and to review the list of prohibited items. Firearms must be unloaded, secured in a hard-sided case, and checked into baggage in compliance with TSA regulations.

For real-time assistance, travelers can contact @AskTSA or text 275-872. Those requiring special accommodations should call TSA Cares at least 72 hours before their departure at (855) 787-2227.

Officials advise travelers to allow extra time at the airport and to “Prepare, Pack, Declare” to help keep the security lines moving smoothly during one of the year’s busiest travel periods.
