TALLAHASSEE, FL – A winter storm warning is in effect for Florida’s Panhandle and Big Bend regions through Wednesday. Officials warn of hazardous road conditions and power outages due to heavy snow and ice accumulation.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the warning begins at 1 p.m. Tuesday and extends until noon Wednesday. Up to 4 inches of snow and sleet are expected, along with two-tenths of an inch of ice. The storm could disrupt both Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes, particularly on bridges and overpasses, which are prone to freezing first.
Residents are advised to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary. If travel cannot be avoided, officials recommend carrying emergency supplies, including flashlights, water, and non-perishable food. Drivers should allow extra travel time and avoid sudden braking or acceleration on slick surfaces.
The storm may also bring widespread power outages. Ice buildup on tree limbs and power lines increases the risk of prolonged outages in affected areas. Utility companies urge residents to report outages and avoid downed lines.
Temperatures in the Big Bend region are forecast to stay below freezing until mid-Wednesday, prolonging dangerous conditions. Authorities recommend wearing multiple layers if venturing outside and ensuring exposed skin is covered to prevent frostbite.
For road condition updates, residents can call 511 or check state transportation websites. This storm marks a rare winter event for Florida, underlining the importance of preparation and caution.
