Tampa, Florida – Thunderstorms and oppressive heat will grip Tampa by midday Friday, bringing dangerous driving conditions and a 70% chance of evening downpours. With heat index values near 98°F and heavy rain likely after 2 p.m., drivers should avoid I-275 and U.S. 92 during peak hours.

According to the National Weather Service, storms will increase in coverage late Friday afternoon through the night, with localized rainfall reaching up to a quarter inch. Winds will stay light but could gust near stronger cells. Showers will persist into Saturday and Sunday, disrupting weekend plans across Hillsborough and Pinellas counties.

Friday’s high will hit 91°F, but with tropical humidity, it may feel closer to 100°F. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, limit outdoor exposure, and monitor for flash flooding on low-lying roads. Evening events may be delayed or canceled, especially along the Tampa Riverwalk and outdoor venues.

Storm chances remain elevated Saturday and Sunday, each day holding a 60–70% chance of afternoon and evening storms. While early mornings may stay dry, plan for umbrellas and delays later in the day. The heat won’t let up either, with highs in the low 90s through Monday.

⚠️ More storms are expected Monday and Tuesday, keeping roads slick and skies stormy into July.
