Tampa, Fla. – Drivers and outdoor workers in West Central Florida face dangerous heat today, with heat index values climbing near 109 degrees. The National Weather Service warns the combination of extreme heat and high humidity could cause heat illnesses, especially for those without air conditioning.

According to the National Weather Service in Tampa Bay, a Heat Advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. for much of the region, including Tampa, St. Petersburg, Lakeland, and surrounding counties. Residents should avoid strenuous activity, seek shade, and drink plenty of water. Afternoon thunderstorms could bring brief relief but also the risk of lightning and heavy rain.

Today’s high will reach 94 degrees before storms develop after 2 p.m. Winds stay light from the southwest, but humidity will push “feels-like” temperatures into dangerous territory. Motorists on I-275 and I-4 should be alert for sudden downpours that reduce visibility and cause slick roads during the evening commute.

Saturday brings another round of intense heat, with highs near 96 and heat index values around 107. Scattered thunderstorms are likely, with the strongest cells producing gusty winds and heavy rainfall.

Looking ahead, Sunday through midweek stays hot and humid with daily thunderstorm chances. Heat index values remain above 100 degrees most afternoons.
