Melbourne, FL – Dangerous beach and boating conditions are expected along Florida’s Atlantic coast early this week as Tropical Storm Imelda tracks northward after forming near the central Bahamas Sunday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service Melbourne office, the storm is forecast to move parallel to the state’s east coast Monday and Tuesday, generating strong winds, high surf, and life-threatening rip currents. Officials warn that hazardous marine conditions will begin to develop late Sunday and continue into midweek.

As of 2 p.m. Sunday, Imelda carried maximum sustained winds near 45 mph with higher gusts. The storm’s projected path shows it remaining offshore, though coastal areas from Miami up through Brevard County could see the greatest impacts in surf and boating hazards.

Meteorologists have classified the risk outlook as “high” for both Monday and Tuesday, with conditions gradually improving later in the week. Authorities advise residents and visitors to avoid entering the water, closely monitor updates, and use caution if traveling near the coast.

Forecast updates will be issued by the National Hurricane Center and local weather service offices as the system progresses.
