Tampa, FL – A new system has developed in the Atlantic as Tropical Storm Gabrielle officially formed Wednesday, Sept. 17, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
The storm is currently moving west-northwest across the central Atlantic with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph and forward movement near 22 mph. Forecast models show Gabrielle gradually strengthening over the next several days as it tracks toward the northwest.
According to the NWS National Hurricane Center, there is no immediate threat to West Central or Southwest Florida at this time. However, officials emphasize the importance of preparedness as the 2025 hurricane season remains active.
Meteorologists note that the forecast cone represents the probable path of the storm’s center but not the full size of its impact area. Hazardous weather conditions may occur outside of the projected cone.
“Residents and visitors are encouraged to revisit their hurricane preparedness plans as hurricane season continues,” NWS Tampa Bay officials said in a Wednesday update.
As of now, no coastal watches or warnings have been issued. Updates will continue daily as forecasters track Gabrielle’s development in the open Atlantic.
