Sanford, Florida – A rotating thunderstorm over Sanford is prompting an urgent tornado warning for central Seminole County Sunday evening, putting neighborhoods near downtown Sanford and the Orlando-Sanford International Airport at immediate risk through 6:15 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, radar detected rotation at 5:49 p.m. EDT in a severe thunderstorm positioned over Sanford and moving northeast at about 15 mph. The storm is capable of producing a tornado and hail up to 1 inch in diameter.

The most immediate impacts are expected across central Seminole County, including areas surrounding Sanford and the airport corridor. Drivers along Interstate 4, U.S. Highway 17-92, and State Road 46 could encounter sudden downpours, strong wind gusts, and rapidly changing visibility as the storm shifts northeast.

If a tornado develops, flying debris could cause damage to roofs, vehicles, and trees. Mobile homes are especially vulnerable in these conditions. Quarter-size hail may also damage vehicles and outdoor structures.

Residents in the warning area should move immediately to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building and stay away from windows. Anyone outdoors, in vehicles, or in mobile homes should seek substantial shelter and protect themselves from flying debris.

The storm will continue moving northeast across Seminole County through the early evening. Additional warnings could be issued if the storm intensifies or new rotation develops.
