Tallahassee, Fla. – Bright sunshine and muggy air are already building across Florida’s Big Bend, but the calm won’t last. By midafternoon, towering clouds are expected to erupt into thunderstorms, bringing lightning, heavy downpours and slick roads just as the day’s heat peaks.
According to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, temperatures will climb to around 93 degrees today while heat index values reach as high as 105 degrees. Showers and thunderstorms become likely after 2 p.m., with a 60 percent chance of rain through the afternoon and evening. Rainfall amounts generally remain between one-tenth and one-quarter inch, although stronger thunderstorms could produce locally heavier totals.
The combination of high humidity and intense sunshine will make outdoor conditions feel significantly hotter than the thermometer suggests. Residents should limit strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day, drink plenty of water and seek air conditioning whenever possible. Even brief exposure inside parked vehicles can become dangerous in minutes.
Motorists along Interstate 10, U.S. 27, U.S. 319 and Capital Circle should prepare for rapidly changing weather later today. Brief downpours may reduce visibility, while lightning and ponding water could slow traffic during the evening commute. If thunder is heard, move indoors immediately and delay outdoor recreation until storms pass.
The active summer pattern continues into Sunday, when another 40 percent chance of afternoon thunderstorms accompanies highs near 91 degrees. Rain chances increase further Monday and Tuesday, with 80 percent probabilities both days as deeper Gulf moisture spreads across North Florida. While widespread severe weather is not anticipated, a few stronger storms may produce gusty winds, frequent lightning and torrential rain. An isolated tornado cannot be ruled out in stronger thunderstorms, but the overall risk remains low.
Looking farther ahead, warmer-than-average temperatures are favored across much of the Southeast later next week, keeping Florida locked into a humid summertime pattern with daily storm opportunities.
