Florida beachgoers are waking up to calm-looking surf that hides a serious danger. Waves roll steadily ashore. The breeze feels mild. But beneath the surface, powerful rip currents are pulling away from the coast.

According to the National Weather Service in Jacksonville, a high rip current risk remains in effect through this evening for beaches across Jacksonville and Northeast Florida, as well as Southeast Georgia. Forecasters warn that conditions can quickly overwhelm even experienced swimmers.

Rip currents form when waves push water toward shore, then force it back out through narrow channels. These currents can pull swimmers away from the beach in seconds. The NWS stresses that rip currents are especially dangerous because they are often hard to spot.

Winds near 10 to 15 mph and lingering swell are helping maintain the risk today. While skies remain mostly fair and temperatures climb toward the upper 50s, the ocean conditions are not safe for swimming. Officials urge beach visitors to stay out of the water entirely.

If entering the water cannot be avoided, swim near a lifeguard and never alone. If caught in a rip current, do not fight it. Float, relax, and swim parallel to shore until free. If unable to escape, face the beach and wave for help.

Looking ahead, beach conditions improve later this week as winds relax and weather turns warmer. By Thursday, highs climb into the low 70s, with only a small chance for showers inland. Friday and the weekend look sunny and mild, with temperatures near 70 degrees, though colder water temperatures still pose risks.

Even during warm December days, rip currents remain one of Florida’s deadliest weather hazards.
