Tampa, Florida – Scattered afternoon thunderstorms are expected to drench parts of Florida today, with the highest chances for rain in interior and southwest regions late Thursday into the evening. Coastal residents can expect highs in the upper 80s, while inland cities like Lakeland and Sebring could reach the mid-90s. Combined with oppressive humidity, heat indices may climb to a dangerous 105 degrees.

According to the National Weather Service in Tampa Bay, storms will be slow-moving, raising concerns for localized flooding in low-lying and poorly drained areas. Rainfall could quickly overwhelm streets, especially in flood-prone neighborhoods of Fort Myers, Bradenton, and inland Polk County.

The combination of heat and humidity poses a risk for heat-related illness, particularly for outdoor workers and vulnerable populations. Officials urge residents to limit strenuous activity during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, and monitor for flooding near creeks and drainage canals.

Storm activity is expected to diminish by late evening, though pop-up showers could linger. More showers and storms are possible heading into the weekend, and heat advisories may be extended.
