Tampa, Florida – Severe storms could sweep across west-central and southwest Florida late Wednesday afternoon, bringing gusty winds, dangerous lightning, and the potential for hail up to an inch in diameter.

According to the National Weather Service in Tampa Bay, a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe thunderstorms is in place from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday, affecting areas from Brooksville to Naples. The main hazards include damaging wind gusts over 40 mph, frequent lightning, and isolated hail events.

Cities including Tampa, St. Petersburg, Sarasota, Fort Myers, and Cape Coral could see rapid-moving storms during the evening commute, potentially downing tree limbs and disrupting power. Motorists are urged to avoid flooded streets and remain alert for sudden downbursts. Outdoor plans should be moved indoors by mid-afternoon, especially along coastal and inland storm-prone corridors like I-75 and U.S. 41.

While not widespread, any storm cells that develop could intensify quickly, prompting local warnings. This is part of Florida’s typical summer pattern, but with an added risk for severe-level wind damage and hail larger than quarters.

Storm threats diminish after 10 p.m., though more scattered storms are possible later this week.
