TAMPA, Fla. – Sweltering heat will grip Tampa Bay through the weekend, but Sunday afternoon brings the first chance of storms. With a heat index approaching 99 degrees and isolated thunderstorms developing, drivers on I-275 and local roads should prepare for slick conditions and reduced visibility late Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service, storm chances rise after 2 p.m. Sunday, with the highest impact expected into the evening hours. Gusty winds and downpours may create hazardous driving, especially near bridges and low-lying roads prone to ponding.

Saturday stays dry but hot, with highs reaching 93 degrees under mostly sunny skies. The combination of heat and humidity will keep outdoor workers and athletes at risk of dehydration. Officials urge residents to stay hydrated, limit strenuous activity during peak heat, and check on vulnerable neighbors.

By Monday, storms become more widespread, with scattered thunderstorms possible through midweek. Overnight lows remain sticky in the mid-70s, offering little relief from the heat. Power outages are possible if storms intensify, so charging devices and preparing for brief disruptions is recommended.

While rainfall will be hit-or-miss, lightning is a threat with any storm. Beachgoers and boaters should plan for sudden weather changes, particularly along the Gulf Coast waters where storms can develop quickly.

Unsettled conditions continue through Tuesday and Wednesday before a slight cooldown midweek. More advisories may be issued if storm coverage expands.
