Orlando, Florida – Strong storms are expected across East Central Florida Friday afternoon, with gusty winds and dangerous lightning threatening the region between 3 and 8 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, a Marginal Risk for severe thunderstorms is in place due to a collision between sea breeze boundaries and increasing tropical moisture. Cities from Orlando and Sanford to Melbourne and Vero Beach may see wind gusts of 45 to 55 mph, with isolated peaks up to 60 mph.

Storm hazards include small hail, brief tornadoes, and minor flooding in low-lying areas. The risk is especially high near the Orlando metro area, where early evening downpours could impact I-4 and surrounding surface roads during rush hour. Deadly lightning is a key concern, especially for outdoor activities.

Coastal residents should also watch for a moderate rip current risk and surf up to 2 feet at Atlantic beaches. Beachgoers are urged to swim near lifeguards and avoid deeper water.

Heat and humidity will remain high, with daytime highs near 92°F in Kissimmee and Sanford. Rain chances hold at 70% across most of the region.

Storm warnings may be upgraded throughout the evening. Monitor local alerts and stay indoors during storms.
