Florida Weather Alert: Special Marine Warnings for Severe Thunderstorms, Hail Near Destin Until 8:45 p.m. CDT

Florida and Alabama – A Special Marine Warning is in effect for parts of the Gulf Coast this evening, as severe thunderstorms bring hazardous conditions to nearby waters. The National Weather Service in Tallahassee, Florida, issued the warning for coastal areas from the Okaloosa-Walton County Line to Mexico Beach, including St. Andrews Bay, until 8:45 p.m. CDT. At 5:48 p.m., radar indicated a severe storm about 34 miles south of Destin, moving eastward at 20 knots.

According to the NWS, the storm is expected to produce wind gusts greater than 34 knots, sudden waves, frequent lightning, and heavy downpours. Boaters in the affected area are advised to seek safe harbor immediately, as large hail could also damage boats and cause injury. The storm, which is positioned over open waters, is currently impacting locations including Panama City Beach and Laguna Beach.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service in Mobile, Alabama, has issued a similar Special Marine Warning for the waters from the Okaloosa-Walton County Line to Pensacola, affecting areas until 6:15 p.m. CDT. A storm located 33 miles south of Destin is producing hazardous conditions with gusty winds and large hail.

Boaters should be prepared for sudden weather changes and take necessary precautions to stay safe. The storm’s movement will continue to bring these conditions to local waters until the warnings expire later this evening.
