Miami, Florida – A thick plume of Saharan Dust is blanketing South Florida today, cutting rain chances and reducing air quality from Miami to West Palm Beach.

According to the National Weather Service in Miami, the dust will persist through Friday, creating hazy skies and potentially harmful conditions for vulnerable groups, especially those with respiratory issues. Colorful sunrises and sunsets may follow, but the health risks outweigh the aesthetics for many.

Residents from Broward to Monroe counties are urged to limit outdoor activity if sensitive to air pollution. Schools, outdoor workers, and the elderly should take precautions by staying indoors during peak hours. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends monitoring local air quality levels via its AirNow platform.

Drivers may notice reduced visibility during early morning and late evening commutes. Though the dust suppresses rainfall, it also traps heat, potentially driving up afternoon temperatures across the region.

The dusty haze is part of a recurring summertime phenomenon when Saharan particles cross the Atlantic. While not uncommon, today’s concentration is enough to prompt a regional advisory.

Air quality alerts remain in effect through Friday evening, with clearer skies possible by the weekend.
