Florida – Gentle ocean waves may look inviting along Miami’s beaches this morning, but a stronger current beneath the surface is creating a hidden hazard for swimmers.
Beachgoers across Miami-Dade County are being urged to use caution as a rip current statement remains in effect through Friday evening along the Atlantic coastline. Stronger easterly winds pushing toward shore are increasing the risk of dangerous currents along popular beaches from South Beach to Sunny Isles and Key Biscayne.
According to the National Weather Service in Miami, breezy onshore winds near 15 mph with gusts around 20 mph will continue pushing water toward the coast today. That setup increases the chance of rip currents capable of quickly pulling swimmers away from shore.
Aside from the coastal hazard, South Florida is settling into classic early spring warmth. Skies gradually brighten through the day with highs reaching around 79°F across Miami.
A few isolated showers may drift across the metro area, but rain coverage remains limited. Most neighborhoods stay dry through the afternoon and evening hours.
The warm and breezy pattern continues into the weekend. Saturday brings a 20 percent chance of passing showers with highs near 80°F across Miami and nearby communities including Coral Gables, Hialeah, and Homestead.
Sunday remains warm and partly sunny with temperatures near 80°F again. Early Sunday morning also marks the Daylight Saving Time change, when clocks jump forward at 2 a.m., giving South Florida noticeably longer evenings of daylight.
Meteorologists say this steady pattern may hold through early next week with highs hovering around 80°F and occasional spotty showers developing in the afternoon sea breeze.
For beachgoers, the biggest concern remains the ocean currents. Swim near lifeguards and avoid entering the water alone where rip currents are present.
