MIAMI, Fla. – South Florida drivers may face a stormy start Tuesday as heavy rain and thunderstorms roll into Miami during the morning commute. Flash flooding could quickly develop on I-95 and U.S. 1, with lightning and gusty winds making travel dangerous through the afternoon. Officials urge residents to avoid unnecessary trips and prepare for possible power outages.

According to the National Weather Service in Miami, thunderstorms are most likely between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 2. Afternoon highs near 89 degrees, combined with high humidity, will push heat index values into the 100s before storms sweep across the metro area. Forecasters warn of ponding on roadways, strong wind gusts, and isolated power disruptions.

The stormy setup continues midweek, fitting the seasonal shift that comes with meteorological fall. Showers and storms remain likely Wednesday and Thursday, with little relief in sight until Friday. Residents should keep phones charged, allow extra travel time, and avoid driving through flooded intersections.

Elsewhere in the U.S., the start of September could bring a rare sight. NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center reports that the Northern Lights may be visible as far south as Missouri, Kentucky, and New England overnight. Miami skies, however, will stay stormy and unsuitable for aurora viewing.
