Florida – Waves may look calm from shore, but a dangerous and often invisible threat is building along Jacksonville-area beaches this afternoon. Strong rip currents are already forming and can pull even experienced swimmers away from shore within seconds.

According to the National Weather Service in Jacksonville, a high rip current risk remains in effect through this evening for northeast Florida beaches, including Duval, Nassau, and St. Johns counties. Officials warn that these currents can quickly drag swimmers into deeper water, creating life-threatening conditions.

Beachgoers at Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach, and Atlantic Beach should take this risk seriously. Entering the water is strongly discouraged unless lifeguards are present. If you do go in, stay close to shore and never swim alone. Conditions can change rapidly, especially during the afternoon when tides and winds enhance the current strength.

If caught in a rip current, do not fight it directly. Float, remain calm, and swim parallel to the shoreline until you escape the pull. Then angle back toward shore. Panic and exhaustion are the biggest dangers in these situations.

The rip current risk remains the most urgent concern through this evening, especially for anyone heading to the beaches. Conditions can turn dangerous quickly, and staying out of the water is the safest choice. Additional advisories may be issued if conditions persist. Are you seeing rough surf or warning flags at your local beach today?
