Jacksonville, Fla. – Road crews, beachgoers, and commuters across Northeast Florida are bracing for a sweltering Friday with heat index values pushing up to 111 degrees. The National Weather Service warns that the combination of extreme heat and high humidity could lead to heat-related illnesses without proper precautions.
According to the National Weather Service Jacksonville office, the heat advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. Friday for portions of northeast and northern Florida and southeast Georgia. Residents along the I-95 corridor from St. Augustine to the Georgia border should limit outdoor activities, drink water often, and check on vulnerable neighbors.
Thunderstorm chances will rise Saturday afternoon, especially inland from Jacksonville toward Lake City and Gainesville. These storms could bring heavy downpours, frequent lightning, and brief gusty winds, potentially slowing travel on I-10 and local roadways. Beach conditions may also become hazardous with strong rip currents developing.
Friday night will stay muggy with lows in the upper 70s. Saturday brings highs in the mid-90s before storms arrive. A brief dry window is possible Sunday morning before another round of scattered storms develops.
Residents should plan early outdoor work for morning hours, use shade when possible, and keep pets indoors during peak heat. Cooling centers remain open across Duval County for those without air conditioning.
