Melbourne, Florida – Extreme heat and a rising risk of rip currents are creating hazardous conditions across Central Florida on Friday, with heat indexes pushing into dangerous territory and temperatures climbing into the mid-90s across several inland cities.
According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, a Major HeatRisk is in effect for much of East Central Florida, including Orlando, Kissimmee, and Leesburg. The warning is the third-highest of four levels and signals heightened danger for people without reliable cooling. Highs today will reach 95°F in Orlando, 96°F in Kissimmee, and 93°F in Okeechobee, with humidity driving the real-feel temperature even higher.
The coast isn’t offering much relief. From Daytona Beach to Vero Beach, a moderate risk of rip currents is in place, with waves breaking 2 to 3 feet. Swimmers are urged to heed lifeguards, avoid venturing far from shore, and watch for posted red or yellow flags.
Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, wear light-colored clothing, and avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day. Heat stroke symptoms include confusion and unconsciousness and require immediate medical attention.
Heat and beach hazards will persist into the weekend, with updated advisories possible by Saturday morning.
