Melbourne, Florida – Residents across east central Florida should prepare for another day of dangerous heat followed by strong thunderstorms capable of producing damaging wind gusts, torrential rainfall and hazardous beach conditions through this evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, afternoon temperatures will climb into the lower to middle 90s, with peak heat index values between 102 and 107 degrees. Highs are expected to reach 95 degrees in Orlando, 96 degrees in Leesburg, 93 degrees in Daytona Beach, 93 degrees in Melbourne, 93 degrees in Port St. Lucie, and 92 degrees in Vero Beach. Residents should stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day and check on vulnerable family members and pets.
Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. A Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe thunderstorms is in place from Titusville and Orlando northward, where isolated storms could produce wind gusts up to 60 mph, frequent cloud-to-ground lightning and localized power outages.
Slow-moving storms may also produce 3 to 5 inches of rain in isolated locations, prompting a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 4) for excessive rainfall across much of east central Florida. Heavy downpours could lead to ponding on roads and localized flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas.
Beachgoers should also use caution, as a Moderate Risk of rip currents continues along east central Florida beaches. Swimmers are urged to stay near lifeguards and avoid entering the surf if conditions appear hazardous.
The active summer weather pattern is expected to continue through the evening. Additional severe thunderstorm or flood-related advisories may be issued as storms develop this afternoon.
