Orlando, Fla. – Dangerous heat and strong afternoon storms are creating hazardous conditions across East Central Florida today, with heat index values soaring to 101° and a risk of coin-sized hail and wind gusts topping 55 mph through 8 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, the entire region—including Orlando, Daytona Beach, and Melbourne—is under a Level 1 severe storm threat from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Isolated storms could produce hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter, gusts exceeding 60 mph, and frequent lightning. Locally heavy rainfall of up to 3 inches is also possible.
Beachgoers face added risk, as a moderate chance of rip currents has been issued for all Central Florida Atlantic beaches. Surf conditions around 1 to 2 feet may appear calm but can pull swimmers into deeper waters quickly.
Cities like Leesburg and Okeechobee are also experiencing peak heat index readings over 100°, prompting heat safety reminders: hydrate regularly, wear light clothing, and avoid outdoor activity between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Storm risks taper off later tonight, but conditions remain unstable. More alerts may follow if storms strengthen or shift in coverage.
