Jacksonville, FL – A widespread Freeze Warning remains in effect across northeast and northern Florida and portions of southeast Georgia from 3 a.m. to 9 a.m. Friday, with temperatures expected to drop to around 30 degrees in several inland areas. The National Weather Service in Jacksonville says residents should prepare for one of the coldest mornings of the season so far.

The alert covers Suwannee, Baker, Nassau, Union, Bradford, Gilchrist, Hamilton, Alachua, Columbia, Clay, Putnam, Duval and surrounding counties in Florida, along with inland portions of Glynn and Camden counties in Georgia. Communities such as Gainesville, Lake City, Live Oak, Macclenny, Starke, Hilliard, Jasper and parts of western Jacksonville are expected to dip to freezing before sunrise.

According to the National Weather Service, sub-freezing temperatures may damage or kill tender plants and pose risks to outdoor pets that do not have adequate warm shelter. Officials also urge residents to check on vulnerable groups, including young children, older adults and individuals without stable housing.

Clear skies and dry air overnight will allow temperatures to fall quickly, increasing the likelihood of frost and patchy ice on elevated surfaces. Temperatures should rise gradually after 9 a.m., but another cold morning may be possible this weekend in some locations.

Residents are advised to cover outdoor vegetation, bring pets indoors and ensure heaters and fireplaces are used safely.
