Melbourne, FL – Dry air, gusty winds, and low humidity are combining to create elevated fire danger across East Central Florida this afternoon, with increased rip current risk also reported along Atlantic beaches.
According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, north to northeast winds between 5 and 12 mph, along with minimum humidity levels ranging from 20 to 35 percent, are rapidly drying surface fuels. These conditions are expected to persist through Sunday evening, raising the risk of quick fire growth across interior counties, including Orange, Osceola, Lake, and Volusia.
Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged. Officials urge residents to avoid parking on dry grass, properly discard cigarette butts, and report any fire activity immediately to local authorities.
In addition to the fire risk, beachgoers along Central Florida and Treasure Coast beaches, from Melbourne to Vero Beach, should use caution. Moderate rip current risks are in place as breaking waves reach heights of 2 to 3 feet. Swimmers are advised to stay near lifeguards, heed posted signs, and watch for beach patrol flags.
Conditions are expected to remain warm and dry with ample sunshine. Highs will reach the upper 70s to near 80°F inland, and mid-70s along the coast. Fire and beach safety measures remain critical through the end of Sunday.
