Melbourne, Florida – Drivers across east central Florida are dealing with dangerous early-morning travel conditions Sunday as expanding areas of fog reduce visibility to less than a mile, with pockets of dense fog dropping visibility below a quarter mile at times.

According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, fog developed overnight and continues to spread across Volusia, Lake, Seminole, Orange, Osceola, and northern Brevard counties. The most hazardous conditions are occurring during the pre-dawn and early morning hours, especially near lakes, rivers, and low-lying areas where moisture is more concentrated.

Motorists traveling along Interstate 4, State Road 528, U.S. Highway 17-92, and area surface roads may encounter sudden and sharp drops in visibility. These rapid changes can make it difficult to see stopped traffic, lane markings, or pedestrians, increasing the risk for accidents during the morning drive.

Officials urge drivers to slow down, increase following distance, and use low-beam headlights rather than high beams, which can reflect off fog and further reduce visibility. Delaying travel is recommended if possible until fog lifts later this morning.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve as temperatures rise and winds increase later Sunday morning. No additional fog advisories are currently in effect, but motorists should remain alert for localized dense fog through mid-morning, especially in rural and lake-adjacent areas.
