Florida starts the morning wrapped in a gray haze as dense fog settles across northeast Florida, muting headlights and swallowing familiar landmarks. Visibility drops quickly in pockets, turning routine drives into slow, watchful crawls just as holiday travel momentum builds.

According to the National Weather Service, a Special Weather Statement remains in effect for Jacksonville and surrounding counties due to areas of locally dense fog. Visibility may drop below one mile at times, especially south of Waycross and across inland and coastal northeast Florida. Fog lingers through the morning hours before gradually lifting.

In Jacksonville, fog and mist reduce visibility along major corridors, including I-95, I-10, and surface roads near the St. Johns River. Drivers should use low-beam headlights, slow down, and leave extra distance between vehicles. Sudden visibility changes remain possible, particularly near marshes and low-lying areas.

Conditions improve later, but fog returns Sunday morning. According to forecasters, widespread dense fog is likely again before mid-morning Sunday, followed by sunshine and warmer temperatures. Highs climb into the mid-70s, offering a springlike feel for late December.

Sunday night stays mild with patchy fog lingering in spots. Monday turns breezy and warm, with highs nearing the upper 70s before a cooler trend arrives next week. By Tuesday, highs fall into the mid-50s, signaling a quieter but cooler end to the year.

Looking ahead, New Year’s Eve on Wednesday appears dry and comfortable, with sunshine and highs near the upper 50s. Nights cool into the 30s and 40s as 2026 approaches, a noticeable change after recent warmth.

Fog remains the primary hazard through Sunday morning. Conditions can change quickly. Traveling today or early Sunday? Share what visibility looks like where you are.
