Melbourne, FL — Beachgoers and boaters along east-central Florida should avoid the water through Monday as hazardous conditions intensify. Strong rip currents, high surf, and minor coastal flooding pose risks to public safety, especially along the Volusia County coast.
According to the National Weather Service, a High Surf Advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. Monday. Breaking waves between 6 and 10 feet are forecast in the surf zone, causing dangerous swimming and erosion. A High Rip Current Risk also continues into late Monday night, warning of swift water channels capable of sweeping swimmers into deeper waters.
Residents should remain vigilant, especially during high tide, when coastal flooding could impact low-lying areas. Minor erosion along the beach dunes is also expected. Fresh easterly winds and rough seas, reaching heights of 9 to 14 feet offshore, create additional hazards for small boats. Officials advise against boating in these conditions.
Local Impact This Week
Monday’s forecast remains breezy with partly sunny skies and highs around 76°F. East-northeast winds at 15-20 mph, with gusts up to 25 mph, will persist, keeping marine conditions hazardous. By Tuesday and Wednesday, chances for showers and thunderstorms increase to 50%, accompanied by highs near 78°F. Winds are expected to ease slightly midweek.
Safety Advisory
Residents and visitors should heed lifeguards’ warnings, avoid swimming, and stay clear of jetties or piers where rip currents often form. For boaters, small craft advisories highlight dangerous offshore conditions. Officials urge all to prioritize safety and avoid unnecessary risks.
