Miami, Florida – Beachgoers heading out this morning face a dangerous situation in the water, with an over 80% chance of rip currents creating life-threatening conditions along the Atlantic Coast.

According to the National Weather Service in Miami, a high risk of rip currents is in place for Atlantic-facing beaches, including Miami Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach, through at least Friday evening. A Small Craft Advisory also remains in effect for Atlantic waters during that time, with hazardous conditions for boaters, while Gulf waters improve later this morning.

Temperatures across South Florida are climbing into the mid to upper 70s today, including 76 degrees in Miami, 75 in Fort Lauderdale, and near 79 along the Gulf Coast in Naples and Everglades City. While the warm weather may draw people to the coast, officials warn that surf conditions remain dangerous despite calm-looking skies.

Lifeguards urge swimmers to stay near staffed beaches and pay close attention to warning flags. Rip currents can pull even experienced swimmers away from shore quickly, especially during periods of stronger wave action.

Anyone entering the water should use extreme caution or avoid swimming altogether. Hazardous marine and beach conditions are expected to continue through Friday evening, with additional advisories possible into the weekend.
