Tampa, Florida – Boaters across the Gulf waters are facing hazardous conditions right now as strong northeast winds and building seas push into the region, making navigation dangerous through Sunday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Tampa Bay, a Small Craft Advisory is in effect from 3 p.m. Saturday through Sunday afternoon for all Gulf waters, including Tampa Bay and Charlotte Harbor. Northeast winds are increasing to 20 to 30 knots, with seas building to 4 to 6 feet, creating rough and potentially unsafe conditions for smaller vessels.
The strongest impacts stretch from Cedar Key through Tampa and south toward Sarasota and Fort Myers, where choppy waters and persistent winds will make handling boats difficult, especially for inexperienced operators. Bays and nearshore waters will also see elevated wave action, reducing stability and visibility.
Mariners are urged to avoid unnecessary trips, secure loose gear, and check vessel readiness before heading out. Conditions could quickly worsen in open Gulf waters, where wave heights will be highest.
Winds are expected to gradually weaken late Sunday afternoon as the cold front moves away, but advisories remain in effect until conditions improve.
