Largo, FL – A Pinellas County Schools employee was arrested this week after allegedly striking a 6-year-old special needs student at Oakhurst Elementary School, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said the incident occurred on September 15, 2025, when 65-year-old David Jones was working as a substitute classroom assistant in a special needs classroom. After lunch, the child, who is autistic and semi-verbal, was hitting and kicking as a form of communication. Deputies allege Jones swung a lunch box containing a metal canister, striking the child in the face and leaving a visible welt on the student’s forehead.

On September 16, investigators said Jones admitted to the incident, describing it as a “knee-jerk” reaction despite knowing the child had special needs. He was arrested and charged with one count of child abuse before being booked into the Pinellas County Jail.

Authorities noted that any questions about Jones’ employment status should be directed to Pinellas County Schools. The investigation is ongoing, and no additional details about the victim will be released under state law.
