Tampa, Florida – Scattered thunderstorms are expected to intensify across Central and South Florida this afternoon, with the greatest risk for severe weather targeting areas south of the I-4 corridor.

According to the National Weather Service in Tampa Bay, a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe storms is in place through Saturday evening. Strong cells could bring damaging wind gusts, large hail, and frequent lightning, particularly in counties like Polk, Hardee, Highlands, and Charlotte.

Drivers along U.S. 17 and I-75 may encounter reduced visibility and sudden wind bursts, especially near Bartow, Arcadia, and Fort Myers. Outdoor events should be reconsidered, and residents are urged to secure loose items and stay indoors during storms.

While rainfall may be scattered, isolated storms could become briefly severe, posing localized threats to power lines and mobile homes. This setup is typical of late May patterns in the region, with daytime heating fueling afternoon convection.

The threat will taper off later this evening, but residents should monitor local alerts and have multiple ways to receive warnings. Additional advisories could be issued if storm strength increases.
