Tampa, Fla. – A band of strong thunderstorms is tracking south through Florida this morning, bringing a risk of gusty winds, lightning, and heavy downpours from the Nature Coast to Fort Myers by early afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Tampa Bay, a Level 1 (Marginal) severe storm risk is in effect for much of West Central and Southwest Florida through 2 p.m. Saturday. The most active period for severe weather is expected between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. near Tampa Bay and the I-4 corridor, shifting south toward Sarasota, Cape Coral, and Fort Myers between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
Cities including St. Petersburg, Brandon, and Arcadia may see isolated storms capable of producing damaging wind gusts (up to 14% probability), frequent lightning, and localized flooding on low-lying roads. Interstate 75 and U.S. Highway 41 could see travel delays during heavier downpours. Outdoor events and early weekend plans may be impacted across the region.
Residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor items, remain weather-aware, and avoid driving through water-covered roadways. Thunderstorm activity should taper off by mid-afternoon as the system exits to the south.
Another update will be issued if storms intensify or new warnings are issued later today.
