Bradenton, FL – The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a new phone scam involving callers impersonating probation officers and targeting families of incarcerated individuals.
According to deputies, scammers are contacting relatives or friends of inmates and claiming they can secure their loved one’s release from jail by purchasing an ankle monitor. The Sheriff’s Office says this is a scam — and no legitimate agency requests money for such services.
“Never send payment to anyone claiming they can get a loved one out of jail,” the department cautioned in its alert Friday. “If you receive a suspicious call or message, hang up and contact your local law enforcement, jail, or probation office directly.”
Officials emphasize that residents should not use the contact information provided in the scam messages. Instead, verify the agency’s phone number online and call directly for confirmation.
