Clearwater, FL – Clearwater Police are warning residents about a new ATM scam where suspects allegedly jam machines and then pose as helpful bystanders to steal victims’ cards and PINs.

According to the Clearwater Police Department, the suspects insert metal, paper, or even coins into ATM slots, making them appear jammed. When customers can’t insert their cards, the scammers—pretending to assist—encourage victims to use the tap function. During the process, the suspects allegedly swap the victim’s card with a stolen one while memorizing the entered PIN.

Police said the suspects then use the stolen cards at other locations to withdraw cash or make purchases. A recent quick response by Clearwater officers led to the arrest of two suspects caught red-handed Saturday at a bank near Sunset Point Road and Old Coachman Road. They face multiple charges, while a third suspect remains at large.

Authorities credited one alert victim, who realized he had been scammed, for helping officers identify and apprehend the suspects.

Investigators urge residents to stay alert at ATMs, especially if someone offers unsolicited help. Police advise never to hand over your card to anyone and to immediately report suspicious activity.
