Sarasota, FL – Two men were arrested this week in connection with an ongoing investigation into illegal gambling operations in Sarasota County.
According to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO), deputies, along with the Florida Gaming Control Commission (FGCC), took Mevin Rodrigues, 28, and Dylan Cardoso, 30, into custody Tuesday at the Magic Arcade on Swift Road. Authorities said the arrests followed a months-long probe into suspected illegal gambling establishments in the area.
Investigators secured a search warrant for the arcade and seized 117 slot machines along with cash during the operation, SCSO said. Both men are facing charges related to the possession of slot machines and operating an unlawful gambling house.
Authorities also reported that Rodrigues and Cardoso were allegedly in the United States illegally with revoked visas. They are being held at the Sarasota County Correctional Facility, with Homeland Security Investigations assisting in the immigration aspect of the case.
Sheriff Kurt A. Hoffman said the arrests highlight a joint effort between state and federal agencies to dismantle illegal gambling businesses. “Not only were these arrestees breaking our state gambling laws, but they have also broken our immigration laws, and through our partnership with ICE, they will be held accountable,” Hoffman stated.
The sheriff’s office confirmed the investigation remains active, with further enforcement operations possible.
