Fort Myers, FL – Some Florida Gulf Coast beaches face a high risk of respiratory irritation due to red tide over the next 36 hours.
According to NOAA’s National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS), harmful algal blooms caused by Karenia brevis could affect beaches in Lee and Collier counties. Red tide can cause respiratory and eye irritation, especially when winds blow onshore.
Officials report moderate to high risks for beachgoers. Sarasota, Charlotte, Manatee, Pinellas, and Monroe counties also show elevated levels. NOAA advises visitors to check local forecasts before heading to the beach.
