Miami, Florida – Rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms are set to drench South Florida through Wednesday night, bringing slick roads and hazardous driving conditions to Miami, Homestead, and the Keys.

According to the National Weather Service in Miami, periods of downpours and isolated storms will continue off and on into Thursday, with most areas seeing around an inch or less of rainfall. A few neighborhoods could receive up to four inches, especially in low-lying or flood-prone zones. While a tropical disturbance in the northern Gulf carries a 40% chance of development, no significant impacts are expected for South Florida regardless of what happens with the system.

Drivers across Miami-Dade and Broward counties should watch for ponding water on roadways and avoid flooded streets. Officials urge residents to slow down, allow extra travel time, and never drive through standing water. Power outages or minor street flooding may occur where heavier rain falls. The worst conditions are most likely during afternoon and evening hours.

Today’s weather isn’t expected to bring widespread flooding, but those in Homestead, Kendall, and the Lower Keys should remain alert for rapidly changing conditions. This round of rain is typical for July but brings a higher risk for isolated street flooding.

Showers and storms will taper off by Thursday morning, but additional advisories could be issued if the Gulf disturbance changes track.
