Tallahassee, FL – Much of the Florida Panhandle and South Georgia have seen little to no rainfall over the past two weeks, with conditions expected to remain dry in the days ahead. The U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) in Tallahassee is urging residents to take precautions against wildfire risks.

According to the NWS, rainfall totals from August 31 through September 13 were far below normal across the region. Cities such as Marianna, Tallahassee, and Albany reported zero measurable rainfall during the period, while Apalachicola recorded just 0.05 inches. Valdosta measured 0.27 inches, and Dothan received 0.58 inches—still just one-third of its typical total.

Compared to the 30-year average from 1991 to 2020, rainfall deficits ranged from 1.2 inches below normal in Dothan to nearly 2.8 inches below normal in Apalachicola. The lack of precipitation has created unusually dry ground conditions, raising the likelihood of wildfires spreading quickly.

Forecasters note that no significant rainfall is expected in the coming week, prolonging the dry spell. Residents across the Florida Panhandle, southern Georgia, and surrounding areas are advised to follow wildfire prevention practices. This includes avoiding outdoor burning, safely disposing of cigarette butts, and keeping properties clear of flammable debris.

The NWS will continue monitoring rainfall patterns and fire danger levels across the region as September progresses.
