Brevard County, FL – A local rescue pup turned therapy dog has captured national attention after being named the 15th Annual American Humane Hero Dog Award winner. K9 “Sgt. Bo,” once a stray in Brevard County, has been recognized for his remarkable journey from shelter dog to school comfort companion.

According to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, Sgt. Bo and his handler, Faye Okert, recently retired from the Metro Nashville Police Department, where Bo served as a therapy dog. His story began years earlier in Brevard County, where he was selected for the department’s Paws & Stripes College — an inmate-guided program that helps train and place service dogs.

After being adopted by Okert, Sgt. Bo continued his service in Tennessee, comforting students and staff following a school shooting earlier this year. Officials say his calm presence and steady companionship offered peace to many in a time of crisis.

Sheriff Wayne Ivey praised the K9’s achievements, saying he could not be more proud of Sgt. Bo and Okert for their dedication and compassion. He highlighted the Paws & Stripes program as a key example of how law enforcement partnerships can change lives — both human and canine.

“This right here, and so many other reasons, are why I tell everyone that Brevard County is the best place in the world to call home,” Sheriff Ivey said.
