Lutz, FL – A 19-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a deadly shooting that claimed the life of a Lutz man last month.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the 1000 block of Helena Street on August 17 at 10:27 a.m. after a woman called 911 reporting her boyfriend had been shot. The victim, identified as 34-year-old Joshua Benjamin, was transported to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Deputies said their investigation revealed that Benjamin and the suspect, Anthony Williams, became involved in a heated argument that escalated into a physical altercation before the shooting occurred. Williams was detained at the scene and initially charged with carrying a concealed firearm and armed trespassing.

Following a review with the State Attorney’s Office, Williams was formally charged on September 4 with second-degree murder with a firearm and carrying a concealed firearm.

Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement that detectives worked extensively to piece together the evidence and ensure accountability in the case. “This suspect not only took an innocent life but also left a family and community grieving. No one should ever have to endure the pain of losing a loved one in such a tragic way,” Chronister said.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office stated that the case remains an active investigation. Updates will be provided by the Public Affairs Office.
