Jefferson, NH – A Florida man was killed and a New Hampshire man was seriously injured in a single-vehicle crash Sunday morning on Route 115 in Jefferson.

According to New Hampshire State Police, the incident occurred at 11:46 a.m. Sunday, when troopers from Troop F responded to a report of a crash near Stag Hollow Road. First responders arrived to find a vehicle off the west side of Route 115 in a field.

Police said the preliminary investigation determined Stephen J. Gooden, 68, of Wentworth, was driving a 2016 Honda CR-V southbound when the vehicle failed to navigate a curve, left the road, and went down an embankment before hitting a utility pole and a tree.

Gooden sustained serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. His passenger, identified as 70-year-old Maurice C. Sasse Jr. of Silver Springs, Florida, was pronounced dead at the scene despite lifesaving efforts by responders.

Emergency crews from the Jefferson Fire Department and Lancaster EMS assisted state troopers at the scene. Investigators noted that a possible medical episode may have played a role in the crash, though the official cause remains under review.

Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information that could assist the investigation to contact Trooper Conor Doyle at (603) 715-7459 or Conor.F.Doyle@dos.nh.gov.
