Newberry, FL – A Newberry man was taken into custody Sunday after allegedly barricading himself inside a residence to avoid arrest.
According to the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded early Sunday morning to the 25000 block of NW 5th Ave in Newberry to arrest 43-year-old Darryl Whitehead. Authorities said Whitehead had an active nationwide extradition warrant for Battery on a Person 65 Years of Age or Older.
Deputies announced their presence and ordered Whitehead to surrender, but he reportedly ignored commands. After obtaining the homeowner’s permission to enter, deputies encountered a barricade formed by furniture and warned Whitehead they would deploy a K9 if he failed to comply.
The Sheriff’s Office stated Whitehead continued to resist and was eventually found hiding in a closet, where he was apprehended by the K9 unit. In addition to the outstanding warrant, he was charged with Resisting without Violence.
