Fort Myers, FL – An inmate at the Lee County Jail passed away Sunday following a medical emergency late Friday night, prompting an ongoing investigation by local authorities.

According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, corrections personnel responded just after 10:30 p.m. on Friday, July 4, to a report of an unresponsive inmate in the jail’s 4E block at 2115 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Staff members administered Narcan and used an automated external defibrillator, successfully reviving the inmate and regaining a pulse. Emergency Medical Services transported the individual to a local hospital, where the inmate later died on Sunday, July 6.

The Sheriff’s Office stated that the incident is being investigated by the Major Crimes Unit, following standard protocol for all in-custody deaths. Authorities noted the inmate had no apparent injuries and reportedly suffered from prior medical conditions. The Medical Examiner’s Office performed an autopsy on Monday, July 7, with the cause of death still pending a toxicology report.

The inmate was housed in a general population cell with another individual of similar criminal history, and both the cellmate and other witnesses are said to be cooperating with detectives. The sheriff emphasized that the care and custody of inmates remains a top priority for the department. The State Attorney’s Office was also notified and is participating in the investigation.

Additional information will be released as soon as the official cause of death is determined, authorities said.
