Vero Beach, Fla. – Treasure Coast residents are sweating through one of the hottest days of the season, with heat index values soaring as high as 101°F in Vero Beach and 100°F in Port St. Lucie by Friday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, the combination of high humidity and temps in the low 90s is pushing conditions into the danger zone. Scattered storms—some strong—are expected to move southward through the afternoon and evening, bringing wind gusts up to 40–60 mph, frequent lightning, and pockets of heavy rainfall.

Melbourne, Stuart, and Okeechobee are also clocking heat index values around 100°F. A 60% chance of storms across the region adds another layer of risk, especially for those spending time outdoors. Lightning and downpours may cause minor flooding on local roads, particularly in areas already saturated.

If you’re heading out today, hydrate frequently, avoid direct sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and wear light, breathable clothing. Those working outdoors should take frequent shaded breaks or find indoor alternatives.

Storm activity is most likely from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday. Stay weather-aware—more alerts may follow as conditions evolve.
