Tallahassee, Florida – Dangerously high heat indices reaching up to 110 degrees are expected across North Florida and South Georgia starting Sunday, prompting warnings for heat-related illness through at least Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, a ridge of high pressure will push actual temperatures into the upper 90s across the region. Combined with high humidity, this will result in heat indices of 105 to 110 degrees from Sunday through Tuesday in cities including Tallahassee, Valdosta, Bainbridge, and DeFuniak Springs. Afternoon highs inland could approach 100°, with a 60% chance of reaching heat advisory criteria (108°F+) across the region.
Peak heat will occur during the afternoon and early evening hours. Impacts range from moderate to major, especially for those without adequate cooling. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor activity during peak hours, stay hydrated, check on vulnerable individuals, and never leave children or pets in vehicles.
Cities like Albany, Panama City, and Cross City are also at risk, with many locations remaining in the red zone for heat index values well into Tuesday. Relief may come by Wednesday as increased storm chances bring slightly cooler temperatures.
Heat alerts may be issued later this weekend. Stay tuned to local NWS updates and take precautions now.
