Tampa, Florida – West Central and Southwest Florida are staring down a dangerous heatwave this weekend, with heat index values expected to soar as high as 111°F by Tuesday. Health officials urge residents to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours and take precautions as the oppressive heat settles in.
According to the National Weather Service in Tampa Bay, the heat index will rise each day, peaking between 104°F and 111°F from Sunday through at least Tuesday. Actual air temperatures will climb into the mid to upper 90s, intensifying the risk of heat-related illness, especially for vulnerable populations and outdoor workers.
The most extreme heat will affect coastal and inland communities from Sarasota and Lakeland to Fort Myers and Sebring. Roads such as I-75 and U.S. 41 could see increased vehicle breakdowns or heat-related hazards. Residents should drink plenty of water, wear light clothing, and avoid outdoor activity between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. when conditions will be most severe.
This could mark one of the hottest stretches of summer so far for the region. More heat advisories may be issued if the trend continues into midweek.
