Tallahassee, FL – A rare and unusually prolonged stretch of cold weather continues across Florida and the Gulf Coast, with freezing temperatures expected to persist through Sunday, February 2, marking what forecasters say could be the longest cold stretch in decades for parts of the region.

According to the National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center, much-below-normal temperatures remain locked in across Florida, southern Alabama, southern Mississippi, and coastal Louisiana. Overnight lows are forecast to fall into the 20s and 30s, with hard freezes possible across northern and interior Florida. Even central and coastal areas could see temperatures near or below freezing overnight.

Forecasters say repeated Arctic air intrusions have prevented Florida from experiencing its typical winter warmups. Daytime highs across much of the state are expected to remain in the 40s and 50s, which is well below average for late January and early February.

Another reinforcing surge of cold air is expected late Friday into Saturday, keeping freezing conditions entrenched through the weekend. Officials warn the extended duration of cold increases the risk of burst pipes, damage to sensitive crops, and harm to pets and exposed outdoor plumbing, particularly in areas unaccustomed to sustained freezing temperatures.

Agricultural officials are urging growers to protect citrus crops and other sensitive vegetation. Residents are encouraged to bring pets indoors, insulate outdoor faucets, drip indoor plumbing overnight, and check on elderly or vulnerable neighbors.

Boaters and coastal residents should also be prepared for cold, gusty conditions that may create hazardous marine conditions along the Gulf Coast.
