Miami, FL – Tropical Storm Imelda is bringing dangerous conditions across parts of the Bahamas, Cuba, and the southeastern United States today, with heavy rainfall and flooding expected to continue through Tuesday.

According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Imelda is producing tropical storm-force winds of up to 45 mph while moving north at 8 mph as of Monday morning. The storm is forecast to bring flash flooding, urban flooding, and possible mudslides in higher terrain. Coastal South Carolina and North Carolina could also see isolated flooding through Tuesday.

The NHC warns that dangerous rip currents and high surf generated by both Imelda and nearby Tropical Storm Humberto are spreading along the Florida and Georgia coasts. These conditions are expected to extend northward along much of the East Coast early this week, posing risks to swimmers and boaters.

Officials advise residents in Bermuda to monitor the storm closely, as a Hurricane Watch may be issued later this week depending on Imelda’s track. While the center of the storm is expected to remain offshore from Florida, the outer bands are already producing hazardous marine conditions and localized flooding in low-lying areas.

NOAA urges beachgoers and coastal residents to remain alert. “Even if the storm stays offshore, the risk of rip currents and rough surf is significant,” forecasters stated Monday.

Travelers and commuters along the East Coast are also warned to expect delays from road closures in flood-prone areas. Emergency officials recommend avoiding beach waters and securing property ahead of worsening conditions.
